Screen-Free Week

Hello everyone! Hope your Sunday has been productive and refreshing so far! Today I wanted to tell you about something that I just came across and want to participate in during this coming week: Screen-Free Week!

I remember when I was in elementary school, we always participated in this event known as “TV-Turnoff Week” every year. It was basically a week when all the families were supposed to not watch TV for the entire week. I remember it being really competitive and you had to have your parents sign a form if you completed the week, and you would get prizes and stuff. And over the past 10 years or so it has morphed into Screen-Free Week, which now encompasses cell phones, video games, and basically all screens. The international initiative has been running since 1994, and you can find out more information on their website if you’re interested.

I was thinking about it recently and I wanted to try doing the challenge again as an adult. I looked it up and found that the week starts tomorrow, May 01! How crazy! Lately I’ve noticed that whenever I have some downtime I usually just sit in front of the TV, whether I’m actually watching it or not. And sometimes hours will go by and I’ll just be on my phone, and I haven’t actually done anything notable or productive. I want to change that and spend my time making myself a better version of me.

I’m pretty sure the initiative is to help children do better in school without the distractions of television. But I’m going to look at it as a week to challenge myself to get outside, work on some hobbies, and get a little more human interaction. (Plus it saves electricity!) I’m really excited to see what a week will be like without the constant distraction of something as useless as tv and iPhone games. And by the way, I’m not completely following the rules. I still plan on blogging this week, updating to social media for the blog, and interacting with my readers. I will just be avoiding personal time spent on the internet and all tv and games.

Even though I don’t have much time to plan for the week, I’ve decided to come up with a few activities that I’d like to do instead of screen time this week. I think that having a plan will help me to avoid being bored and accidentally falling into bad habits again. So here are some ideas of activities I plan to do:

  • Gardening
  • Work on my bullet journal
  • Hang out at the pool and get a tan
  • Read magazines
  • Finish spring cleaning
  • Wash my car
  • Yoga and lifting weights
  • Scrapbooking
  • Cooking and baking
  • Decluttering closets and drawers
  • Schedule lots of blog posts
  • Take walks
  • Do some DIYs I’ve been saving
  • Spend time with friends and family

Have you had any experience with TV Turnoff Week or Screen-Free Week? Have you ever tried to do something like this in the past, and how did it turn out? I’d love to hear your feedback and advice in the comments! And please do let me know if you’d like to participate with me! Thanks for reading!

  1. This is a great idea! I have lately been trying to limit my screen time, because i’ve noticed myself becoming more and more addicted to technology, spending way to much time on my phone. Its a difficult thing to do, but when you put down the phone I find myself being more and more creative and productive. I enjoyed the post!

  2. This is honestly such a good idea! I’d love to participate but it’s hard because I have to do 99% of my schoolwork on the computer and I’d miss my phone! But it sounds so nice just having that time to read and do other non-screen related things! Best of luck!

  3. This is an amazing idea! I have always wanted to do something like this but it would be too hard for me. 1 week without my phone or laptop? It’s actually sad that we’re so addicted to our phones/laptops/tvs! xx Friederike
